This outstanding new Touch release is an album comprised of documents made by sound recordist Jana Winderen over a number of field trips to the Barents Sea, Greenland, and Norway.

Winderen’s focus takes in above-ground sounds of extreme Northern weather systems and the wildlife that inhabits such surroundings, but perhaps more significantly and insightfully, the Oslo-based artist makes probing recordings of sub-aqua environments/habitats using hydrophones.

Winderen delves deeply into glaciers, fjords, and the open ocean with her equipment, capturing incredible unseen worlds populated by baffling and wholly alien sounds. You’ll seldom have any idea as to what might be making some of these amazing noises, but among them are: “Sounds of crustaceans, fish such as cod, haddock, herring, and pollock recorded as they are hunting, calling for a mate or orientating themselves in their environment.”

The disc is divided into three lengthy pieces, each one assembled from a variety of different recordings, carefully layered and edited so as to give a flowing, seamless account of the various locales Winderen explored on her field trips. In terms of recording fidelity and all-round immersive brilliance, Energy Field is right up there alongside Chris Watson’s greatest works—it really is that good. Anyone with an affection for the art of sound recording will instantly adore this release; it’s an album that offers a consistently surprising and illuminating depiction of regions in our natural world that would otherwise be inaccessible to us.

Deliverace Coming Soon: Looks Incredible!

Sure .. we’ve seen rally-type games before, but what you probably haven’t seen is one that just looks this good. Below is the first teaser trailer from Pixelbite Games of their debut App Store application, Deliverace. Imagine a classic top-down racing game like Neo Drift Out .. and then times it by ten!
I have to say, if this teaser video does depict anywhere close to what we can expect from Deliverace’s actual gameplay quality, I’m pretty excited. I think this one could be a pretty big hit.

With no word on pricing yet, it’s hard to tell just how much of a hit this will be on its debut. But, with 3D graphics like the above .. I think we’re in for quite a visual treat. According to the studio Deliverace is set to hit our iPhone screens ‘Early 2010? – and considering its the start of March already, I can’t see the release being too far away, can you?

Brendan Murray – Brendan Murray

Never content to rest on his laurels, we have here a new stellar release from Boston based composer/sound artist Brendan Murray, the followup to the acclaimed 23five release “Commonwealth.” Murray’s compositions tend to hinge upon drones and this eponymous record is no exception. That being said, this is a work which differs considerably from “Commonwealth” or “Wonders Never Cease”(Murray’s Intransitive release from 2007).

In Brendan’s own words: “This record was recorded after a 6 month break from making solo music. Commonwealth was a pretty big undertaking over a few years, and I wanted to see if I could take some of the long range deliberation out of my process and trust decisions that I normally rethink over and over. I also worked under a deadline for the first time.

The six tracks represent the first real overhaul of my approach since I started. I found myself breaking a lot of self-imposed rules and working very quickly. I decided to incorporate recognizable instrumentation, mainly piano and guitar.
I made some shorter pieces and use lots of differentrecording techniques to give each track it’s own character while making it sound like a record. It definitely sounds like my music, but it’s a more delicate in some places than anything I’ve ever released. I regard the ideas as refined and realized, but each track inhabits its own space, almost like chapters in a book.

It’s self-titled or untitled, depending on how you care to think of it. The images in the artwork could also work as symbolic titles. I have left that very open, because the titles of the pieces are purposely evocative. They are also rather personal and refer to specific moments in my life, whether real or imagined. I plan on making a couple of more records like this, as well as continuing to make large, complex pieces. I don’t regard this as a detour. Some people have told me that this music sounds dark, others have told me it sounds really paranoid. I think it’s a weirdly optimistic record.”

SVT Play

Soon SVT Play will be available for the iPhone. The application just has to be approved by Apple first – which unfortunately can take some time. SVT (the Swedish public service broadcaster) is running a cute campaign-site labeled “Dear Steve Jobs” They want to speed up the approval, I see it more as an honorable compliment to Steve Jobs, we all love him, I know i do! ; )

I believe that Mr. Jobs seen the campaign site, I have not a single doubt in my bones… And he is probably very flattered But it’s doubtful that Jobs would speed up the approval, If he did we’d have all-kinds of campaigning sites. I think we all should put our energy in more important and pressing things that we are facing right now global warming, kids dying in malaria etc.

But still when I think of it this app could be a help too and not just an app for our viewing pleasure. SVT Play will be approved, SVT is a public service broadcaster of high quality.
